How It Works

What Is RoRo Shipping?

Roll-On/Roll-Off (RoRo) shipping uses purpose-built vessels with internal ramps that allow wheeled cargo to be driven on and off under their own power. Unlike container shipping, there is no crane loading โ€” vehicles simply drive onto the ship and are secured to the car deck.

RoRo vessels carry thousands of vehicles at a time โ€” from passenger cars and SUVs to trucks, buses and heavy machinery. The method is used extensively by vehicle manufacturers to ship new cars between continents, and is equally available to private owners and dealers.

Because you are not paying for an exclusive container, RoRo is significantly cheaper than FCL container shipping โ€” making it the preferred option for standard vehicles where the enclosed protection of a container is not a requirement.

Preparing Your Vehicle for RoRo

  • 1

Ensure the fuel tank is no more than a quarter full โ€” carriers enforce this for fire safety.

  • 2

Remove all personal belongings โ€” RoRo vessels do not permit cargo inside vehicles.

  • 3

Document all existing bodywork marks with dated photographs before handover.

  • 4

Ensure tyres are correctly inflated and the battery is fully charged.

  • 5

Provide a spare key so port staff can manoeuvre the vehicle on deck if required.
