The UAE is one of the world's busiest vehicle import markets, with Dubai in particular acting as a global hub for vehicle trade. The customs procedures are well-established and, with the right preparation, straightforward. Here is a clear overview of what to expect.
Import Duty Rate
The UAE applies a standard customs duty of 5% of the vehicle's CIF value (Cost, Insurance and Freight) on most passenger vehicles. This is calculated on the declared value of the vehicle at the time of import, plus the cost of shipping and insurance to get it to the UAE port.
Some vehicle categories โ including electric vehicles and certain commercial vehicles โ may attract different duty rates or exemptions. Our customs team can advise on the applicable rate for your specific vehicle before shipment.
Key Documents Required
To clear a vehicle through UAE customs, you will typically need the following:
- Original Bill of Lading or Airway Bill โ the main shipping document issued by the carrier
- Commercial Invoice โ declaring the value of the vehicle
- Original vehicle title / certificate of ownership
- Packing list โ describing the shipment contents
- Valid passport copy of the importer
- UAE residence visa copy โ if the vehicle is being imported as a personal effect
- Insurance certificate โ where applicable
Missing or inconsistent documentation is the most common cause of customs delays. Our team prepares and verifies all documentation before shipment departs to minimise this risk.
Port of Entry: Jebel Ali and Port Rashid
The vast majority of vehicle imports into Dubai arrive through Jebel Ali Port, the largest port in the Middle East and one of the busiest container ports in the world. Port Rashid handles some RoRo traffic. Both ports are managed by DP World and have well-established vehicle processing facilities.
Once the vessel arrives, the customs clearance process typically takes 3โ7 business days, depending on documentation completeness and the customs authority's workload at that time.
RTA Registration After Import
Once customs clearance is complete, a vehicle intended for use on UAE roads must be registered with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai, or the equivalent authority in the relevant emirate. This process involves:
- A vehicle inspection (roadworthiness check)
- Headlight adjustment for right-hand-side roads (for right-hand-drive vehicles)
- UAE insurance arranged in the importer's name
- Payment of registration fees
Left-hand-drive vehicles from markets such as the USA, Canada and Europe are fully compatible with UAE roads and face no additional conversion requirements beyond the standard inspection.
Temporarily Importing a Vehicle into the UAE
If you are bringing a vehicle to the UAE temporarily โ for example, for an event, an extended visit, or in transit to another destination โ a Temporary Admission or Carnet de Passage en Douane (CPD) may be applicable. These instruments allow a vehicle to enter the country without paying full import duties, provided it is re-exported within the permitted period.
Our team can advise on whether temporary admission is appropriate for your situation and assist with the required documentation.
